In 1879, the Stazione Zoologica began to publish its own journal, Mittheilungen aus der Zoologischen Station zu Neapel (since 1916. Pubblicazioni della Stazione Zoologica di Naples), which contained relevant work done at the Stazione by staff and visiting investigators. In addition, within the Fauna and Flora of the Gulf of Naples series, monographs have been published on various subjects (Cephalopoda, Anthomedusae, etc.).

The increasing number of specialist journals with a wide international readership led to a reorganization, and the journal was divided into two separate publications each dealing with a topic not entirely covered by other international journals: Marine Ecology and History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences. These journals have been published and distributed respectively by Blackwell Science (Berlin and Wien) and Taylor & Francis (London, New York and Philadelphia).
